Sumilong, which means "to take refuge," is the old name of this island. Ships used to dock near to take shelter from storms. Today, Sumilon is shelter for the weary soul. Getting to the 24-hectare island is a short 15-minute ride in a banca.
Clear waters
Azure waters greet every visitor. The waters around Sumilon are protected, it is in fact the first marine site in the country enacted by law. Expect a rich diversity in marine life because in 1974 it was also declared a fish sanctuary. If you are lucky enough you'll get to swim with a sea turtle.
Shifting sandbar
The island's most unique feature is the sandbar that changes with the season. Its shape and location vary during the year. A public area in the island expect to see a large crowd, this is where most have their picnic.
Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort is a private enclave of cottages nestled along the cliffs of the island. They have plenty of activities and amenities, and day tours among others. You simply have to check-in at their Bancongon reception, pay the necessary amount and wait for your banca to take you to the island. Day tour rates vary on what day your are going, inclusive of buffet lunch, use of pool and lagoon facilities, mask and snorkel rental, towel and your return trip back to the mainland.
The cheaper option is rent a banca from the mainland. Book it from where you had your whale shark orientation. Just coordinate with the tourism staff so you will be assisted accordingly.
