Whale watching in Oslob


Whale sharks, also known as butanding, are not whales but sharks. Locally known as tuki in Cebu, they are the largest know filter-feeding fish specie in the world. Planktons and small shrimps are their main diet. And they thrive in warm and tropical seas.

Around 2011 when the news broke out in social media about these animals frequenting the seas in Oslob. Though locals say these sharks have long been known to wander in Tan-awan and the nearby areas.


Since then droves of people have flocked to watch these so-called "gentle giants." The throngs of tourists coming from here and abroad have made to have the whale watching activity managed. Tours now happen between 6 am until noon to allow these wild animals to forage for their own food and not be dependent on humans.


Travel
Barangay Tan-awan is located approximately 125 kilometers from Cebu City. You can reach the place by bus or private car. Travel time is around 3 hours depending on traffic.


Arrival
Since this activity is regulated, you will be ushered towards the town's orientation area for briefing. The short seminar includes do's and don'ts in the interaction; no wearing of sunscreen, chemicals in suntan lotions are harmful to whale sharks; no touching policy, maintain a safe distance of five meters from these animals; no flash photography and unnecessary noise. You are expected to abide by these rules.


Fees
Standard fees for whale watching are collected. Inclusive of snorkel, mask, life vest and boat rental. The whole activity is good for 30 minutes only.
